04.02.2025 | The peripheral nervous system can recover relatively well after an injury, for example due to a cut or bruised tissue. However, in some cases the recovery of the nerves is inadequate. The Jacob research group at the iDN has now discovered a mechanism that slows down the regeneration of the peripheral nervous system. ‘A protein called histone deacetylase 8, or HDAC8 for short, is responsible for this,’ explains Claire Jacob. ‘This protein is found in Schwann cells. If we remove it, regeneration is faster’. The publication was published in Nature Communications.
